One of the great fears we have as pet owners is what happens if our pet becomes lost, runs away, or is taken. 1 in 3 pets will go missing from their owner at some point in their lives. One way that we can increase the chances for re-uniting a lost pet with their owner is by implanting a microchip. We use the Home Again Microchip, one of the most popular in the veterinary industry. Through their registration database, they have re-united over 2 million lost pets with their owners.
The microchip is a small, rice-sized computer chip that we implant under the skin between the shoulder blades. We usually do this at the time of spaying or neutering when they are asleep, but it can be done anytime. When scanned, a fifteen digit number will appear that is specific to your pet. One of the added benefits of the Home Again Microchip is that when scanned, it will also show us your pet’s body temperature, making it unnecessary to take a rectal temperature that so many pets dislike.
What You Need to Know About Spay and Neuter Surgeries
Anytime that a stray pet or new pet is brought into Narcoossee Oaks Animal Hospital, we scan it to see if a chip is present. Most county Animal Control facilities will also do this, increasing the chances that we can re-unite a lost pet with their owner. If your pet has not been microchipped, do not hesitate to ask us when the best time to do it would be.
