One of the most important areas to keep healthy in our pets is the mouth. It has often been said that “the mouth is the window into the body.” Many times the condition of our pet’s oral cavity is a reflection of their overall health. Advances in the last 15 years have allowed us to perform many of the same procedures used in human dentistry which results in better overall health for your pet as well as preventing the pain that is associated with so many dental infections and problems. Our goal is to prevent dental disease before it starts which can help to avoid extensive and expensive treatments later on.

Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth

Many pets will actually allow their owner to regularly brush their teeth if the habit is started while they are still young. Some actually like it and look forward to it each day. We strongly encourage pet owners to regularly use products that enhance a healthy mouth and decrease plaque and tartar buildup. While professional cleanings will remove buildup, it is important to maintain on-going home care so that permanent bone damage does not occur. Creating the habit of brushing and maintaining your pet’s oral health will help to prevent many problems that develop as they get older.

Advanced Equipment for Pet Dentistry

At Narcoossee Oaks Animal Hospital, we have a suite in our treatment area that is dedicated exclusively to pet dental care. We have a state-of-the-art digital x-ray unit which allows us to take full mouth radiographs and see if any disease conditions exist below the gum line that we are not able to see with our normal exam. Our high-speed dental drill allows us to perform extractions and other procedures quicker and more safely than was previously possible.

To ensure that your pet’s mouth remains healthy, we recommend having an oral exam at least every year. We also recommend that you establish an at-home oral hygiene regimen for your pet that includes brushing and dental chews when warranted.
