From epic snuggle sessions to special treats, you show your pet you care in a myriad of ways. But by paying close attention to your pet’s health and behavior, you can show them the ultimate form of love—hopefully for years to come. Here are five suggestions from our team at Narcoossee Oaks Animal Hospital.

#1. Challenge your pet

For people, taking a step out of our comfort zone can be a rewarding experience. The same is true for your pet. Providing them with mental and physical stimulation will help them stay sharp and fit. That can be as simple as buying a new toy or as challenging as enrolling them in a training program. Here are some ideas:

  • Purchase a puzzle feeder or toy that requires your pet to work a bit for their food or treat.
  • Teach your pet a new trick such as how to roll over or how to balance on two feet.
  • Try a new exercise with your pet such as swimming or running.
  • Sign up for an obedience class or other training course such as agility, water rescue, or a therapy pet program.
  • Bring your pet with you for a pet-friendly outing to the pet store or a friend’s house. New sights, smells, people, and animals will help broaden your pet’s experiences.

#2. Learn your pet’s love language

Not every pet loves to have their belly rubbed or their ears scratched. By now, you’ve surely figured out what your pet doesn’t like, but have you been able to figure out what gets them tickled pink? Some pets would give anything for a couch snuggle session, others love a good brushing, and others can’t go a day without their neighborhood walk. Take some time to watch and listen to your pet, noticing what activities make them happy, calm, and secure—and which ones make them anxious or fearful. Try to include more joyful activities in your pet’s day, and make an extra effort to ease them through anxious situations.

#3. Put your pet on a regular grooming schedule

Brushing, bathing, and overall grooming not only help your pet look their best, but help them feel good, too. You know that refreshed, rejuvenated feeling you have after a shower or a bath and, while many pets may be averse initially, most feel great after a good scrub. Show your pet you care by establishing a routine grooming schedule—whether at home or in a professional setting.

#4. Help your pet achieve a healthy weight

It can be difficult to resist your pet’s begging, pleading expressions as you venture toward the treat box, but do them a favor and keep treats to a minimum. Many treats are loaded with empty calories that add up quickly. Treats are fine—and encouraged—on occasion or as part of a training program, but they should be a complement to a healthy diet and exercise plan. If your pet is overweight, the best thing you can do is help them achieve a healthy weight. Not sure how? Contact our veterinary team for a consultation.

#5. Exercise your pet daily

Whether your pet is overweight or in ideal condition, consistent exercise should be on your agenda for them. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day with activities such as a brisk walk, a quick run, or a simple backyard romp. Doing so will not only help your pet get fit, but also help you bond with them. If you or your pet are new to exercise or have any underlying health conditions, check with our veterinary team and your health care provider before embarking on your fitness journey.
